Prostate Cancer Treatment Options To Consider

Even with today’s technology and medical services, “Prostate Cancer” can be a frightening diagnosis for any male, but, there are various treatments available to help.  Some of the best treatments and combinations of treatments have been identified d have shown statistically what has worked the best.  Some men have chosen to use alternative methods of treatment and have had success and depending on when the diagnosis is made, alternative treatments may be an option.  There are different types of radiation therapy and medicines that help with pain control and other symptoms to be aware of as time goes on.

Let’s run through some of the information and options available for someone diagnosed with prostate cancer, starting off with the diagnosis itself.   “Prostate cancer is cancer of the small walnut-shaped gland in males that produces seminal fluid, the fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.”   You must also be aware that the cancer cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body.

If the cancer is believed to be local then there are 5 common treatment options for the patient:

1. Removal of the cancerous prostate (radical prostatectomy)
2. Radiation of the cancerous prostate, through either external
radiation or radioactive seed implants (radiation therapy or brachytherapy, respectively)
3. Freezing of the cancerous prostate (cryotherapy)
4. Hormonal therapy, this is considered non-curative and done in addition to radiation therapy or cryotherapy options
5. Observation (waiting)

So, as you can see there are quite a few options and various techniques to handle and treat the diagnosis of prostate cancer.  This type of cancer is also the most common among men.  Medical technology even as advance as it has become is still steps away from avoiding cancers all together, but, we can hope one day it will be a diagnosis of the past.

In the meantime, try to be informed about your medical choices, ask questions when you have concerns and if a reoccurrence happens then try to keep a positive attitude.  If it is caught soon enough there are still options available to you.  The goal is to be aware of what is happening to your body.
